Async business rules are really quite clever the way that they work under their hood is that when an asynchronous business rule would be run an event is created and processed later. Events run on the trigger system the sys_trigger table.

Because these run asynchronously they don't necessarily run when the update was made they can run minutes or even hours later depending on how backed up your event queue is. They also don't have access to previous because previous only exists on in memory operationsgranted you don't need the previous object very often when executing bins rulesand I've only had to use it two or three times in the last twenty years

This type of business role is fantastic because it offloads the work of the current session to event based systemthat returns the UX to the user as fast as possible.
